3 ECOLOGY A Metallic Shell That Deflects Assailants A dark-gray metallic shell covers Kushala Daora's body, which is also an exoskeleton that supports this proud monster's massive frame. This steel-like plating is where the monster gets its title, "Wings of Steel." More than any other region of its body, the plating of its wings and back-both crucial for flight-are said to be impervious to any blade ever forged. But even the toughest steel can be melted, and that is Kushala Daora's weakness. Although an inhabitant of the Elder's Recess, it will not enter the region's volcanic areas of its own volition. As Kushala Daora matures, its old plating begins to rust and new plating bursts through, causing the monster to molt, in a sense. While in the process of molting, the new plating is comparatively softer than its old plating, and during this period Kushala Daora is especially guarded and belligerent. Due to Kushala Daora's massive weight, it doesn't get swept away when engulfed in floods or landslides in the Ancient Forest.
